Description:
The Smyth Library is a 3500 sq.ft well
built, handsome two story brick colonial style Library on one of
Candia main roads It was built in 1932 and has had little or no
upgrading since its construction. It house about 14,000 volumes was
not handicapped accessible and had no areas for discrete library
functions.
The challenge for this Library was to find a way to add 3,500 square
feet on a very steep site to house an additional 10,000 volumes as
well as a children's room, a young adult area, a meeting room and
the much needed work room and administrative areas. The site also
had to proved handicapped accessibility and parking. To make this
site work we also need to involve the abutters and the Town to
develop a modification to the street pattern and communal use of
parking facilities. These site changes were well received by the
abutters and may prove to be changes which benefit all parties.
To date, the library has seen solutions to these challenges on the
existing site, and we are presently exploring the possibility of
looking at other sites which would allow a one story building which
might be better suited to the limited staffing which most small
communities face.
We have been working with the Library Board as well as the Planning
Boards, Selectmen, abutters and other town officials to keep them
apprised of the design process. A project of this type requires the
cooperation of the community in order to come to fruition.
