Landscape Master Plan
WA was retained by the Land & Building Committee of the NHOFH to
prepare a long term Landscape Master Plan for this Elderly Care and
Nursing Home. This work was to be done in concert with a Building
Facilities Master and numerous building renovation projects that
were being done by SGH.
The NHOFH is located in the West end of Concord, NH where a number
of other Nursing Care and major Medical facilities occur. The
facility is comprised of a grouping of old, but Historic buildings,
with the main building being a three story structure, occupying
about XSF on the ground floor. Attached to this older structure is a
new Nursing Unit with approximately a 15,000 SF footprint.
The older, main building is oriented on the site via a prominent
axis that aligns the main entry of this building through an long
brick stairs, an oval one- way vehicular turnaround, and down a long
sloping lawn, with a South view across Concord. Mature plantings of
Burning Bush, some aging/diseased crabapples and a mixture of
deciduous shrubs prevail but are in need of pruning, bed restoration
and partial replacement.
The site is ± 12 acres featuring some prominent slopes that have
been capitalized on with placement of the existing buildings. These
slope have also challenged long term maintenance, watering, snow
removal tasks.
Our work began by conducting a detailed site inventory to map all
existing plantings, drainage and soil conditions, view sheds,
vehicular & pedestrian access, and areas of future building
expansion/renovation. A questionnaire was forwarded to all Land &
Building committee members to document their views regarding current
and long term landscape needs, functions, maintenance and theme.
At this time conceptual concept plans are being prepared to explore
optional ways to reconcile a detailed, long term development program
against a challenging site and historic facility within Concord's
medical corridor.
Stair and Elevator Renovation
WA was selected by the NH Odd Fellows Land & Buildings Committee to
facilitate the installation of a stairwell and elevator at the core
of their 140 bed Nursing Unit.
The project was broken into two phases. The first provided storage
and temporary office for personnel to accommodate phase two, which
would be much more comprehensive in nature.
Phase two included the renovation and expansion of the existing
Dining hall onto an existing roof top deck. Structural steel and bar
joists construction, EPDM roof, and dryvit exterior wall covering to
match the existing expanded the facility by 100%. The second part of
phase two involved the demolition and installation of both a four
story stairwell and elevator shaft. Construction occurred while the
building was fully occupied. Regular meetings with the staff,
contractor, and client saw the project through without a single
complaint.
