WA has provided a comprehensive Master
Plan" building design for an addition that will continue to grow as
needed. Phase One recently completed approximately 11,000 square
feet of additional space. An additional 4,000 square feet builds out
the allowable footprint on the property as Phase Two. Phase three
sees the entire structure accommodate a second story of
approximately 15,000 square feet. The challenge was to convince the
client that the building could be designed in such a way that each
additional would not seem to grow from the one before, but yet
appear as if it had been designed that way from the beginning.
The addition derives its architectural vernacular directly from the
existing building, the use of vertical cedar siding and brick veneer
accent corners, sloped roofs with asphalt shingles. The design
element that ties the entire growth of the building together is the
main entrance lobby and reception space. With the addition of the
second floor sees a large monumental stair blend with the phase one
reception desk. SGH worked closely with the Design-Build Contractor
to insure value added design with a fixed fee structure. Function
drove the design of the electrical and mechanical systems, minimum
impact drove the civil and landscape designs, while cost drove the
structural design balanced only by the functional aspects of the
floor plan.
